It is now almost 40 years since the George re-opened the Welbeck Hotel & Restaurant under their name for the first time and to celebrate we will be having several competitions on our Facebook page

At the time it was just the lower of the three buildings and there were 31 rooms, including 2 for family and two staff rooms, a lounge with an upright piano on the first floor (the current location of room 105) and for the first time in its history (as far as I’m aware) a bar!

There was a bathroom and toilet on each of the 4 floors with rooms.

No lift! That didn’t appear until 1987 and the neighbouring hotels were the Bella Casa (originally the Rosebery after which the bar is named) and the Granada where the apartments are sited above the Alexander Gill lounge on the ground floor.
